Mental, physical, and chemical. It all starts with a pleasurable activity that becomes a habit which turns into an addiction. Addiction occurs when you are no longer able to function properly without the pleasurable activity. Eventually, desire becomes more important than the actual pleasure the activity provides. Instead of focusing on drugs or alcohol, which most people think of when hearing the word addiction, I photographed an addiction more mental than physical or chemical. The desire for a women to appear youthful as she ages.
In my photograph, I used a vanity with a large amount of different types of mirrors on top for the environment. There is also a ton of beauty products scattered on top of the table which are being used by the woman to make herself appear younger. I used an exaggerated amount of mirrors and beauty products to emphasize how much the woman cares about how she looks and how others perceive her. The woman has an exhausted facial expression to make it seem like she has looked in the mirror everyday to change what she looks like. When editing, I decided to make the photo black and white and add vignette to create a tunnel vision effect and showcase how focused the woman is on herself in the mirror.
If I were to re-shoot I would use a similar idea to this, but with a teen model caring about what other girls think about her. She would be comparing herself to models in magazines and trying to change herself to look like them.
