Artist Statement
Fascination is the state of feeling an intense interest in something. The media is a large influence on women and girls in society. Teen girls want to look like the women they see in movies, tv, social media, and magazines. This can cause major issues in teen girls' confidence and self-esteem because they believe that they need to change themselves to look like the models they see in magazines. In my photograph I explored the idea of a teen girl fascinated with the models in magazines.
In my photograph, I used a vanity and mirror as my environment. There is lots of makeup and beauty products scattered on the top of the desk. The character is a teen girl who is writing with sharpie in a magazine. She wrote "perfect" across the models face and drew arrows pointing to the model's lips, nose, eyes, eyebrows, and skin. This represents how the character is judging herself based on the photo of the model, and using the makeup to make herself look "perfect" like the model.
An obstacle I encountered while shooting was that it was difficult to get all of the objects in the photo while not getting Katerina's face in the mirror. I wanted this photo to be more relatable and not have my character's face shown.
