Artist Statement
The idea of the shoulder angel and devil has been shown or referenced in movies, shows, books, media, and almost everyone has heard of the concept. The angel represents conscience and is often accompanied by a shoulder devil representing temptation. They are a useful convention for depicting the inner conflict of a character. It represents our ideals and sense of right and wrong in conflict with our pleasure-seeking part of the mind which ignores possible consequences. For my photo I shot the concept of a girl who needs to make a decision and there is a devil and angel influencing her choice.
In my photograph, I used and plain, light background as my environment, so I could Photoshop the three separate photos together. For the devil, I had my model wear a red shirt, and use sassy and sarcastic body language towards the girl in the middle. For the angel, I had my model wear a white shirt with a halo and flower necklace, and smile at the girl in the middle. For the girl in the middle, I had my model wear a black jacket, and act conflicted and confused. When editing, I placed the angel and devil above the girl and on either side of her and used a faded effect to make the devil and angel appear more spirit-like. Finally, I intentionally put the angel slightly above the devil in order to show the opposing nature of the two, and emphasis how much they differ.
An obstacle I encountered while shooting was that my background wasn't pure white. When editing I had to paint the background white using Photoshop. Therefore, if I was to re-shoot, I would use a plain white wall or backdrop.
