Artist Statement

A secret is defined as a piece of information that someone has that they do not wish to share with someone else. However, sometimes people choose to trust another person with their secrets, because we think that they won’t tell a soul. Science has begun to tell us that clutching secrets too closely causes stress and harms sleep. So basically our brains are wired for truth-telling. Additionally, cognitively, it is just as complicated to keep other people's secrets, no matter how loyal you are. Trusting others with a secret for them only to betray you and share it can be embarrassing and heart breaking. Many of us have used or have heard of the idea of writing secrets in a diary. In my photo, I shot the idea of one the biggest fears of someone who writes in a diary: someone finding and sharing their secrets.

In my photograph, I used a couch against a light colored wall as my environment. There is a side table next to the couch with an old-fashioned telephone on top. The model in my photo is holding a diary in one hand and the telephone in the other with the cord wrapped around her arm. There are also hands coming from the side of the photo that are frantically reaching for the diary and the girl holding it. These hands are the hands of the girl whose secrets are in the diary, and she is trying to prevent the other girl from sharing them. The cord is wrapped around her arm to exaggerate how much she wants to share the secrets in the diary and wont let go even though the hands try to pull her away. Also, the expression on her face is a smirk to make her look as though she has all the power and controls the fate of the owner of the diary.

If I was to re-shoot I would actually have the second model shown in the photo. I was unable to do that for this photo because I didn't have another teen model that could be in the photo trying to grab the diary.
