Artist Statement
Consumption is the using up of a resource. Sometimes, however, it can lead to depletion, extortion, and obsession. Obsession with the action or use of something can be detrimental to your mental and physical health. It can be caused by fears or pressures in your life and society. This photograph is a continuation of my series about the pressures of women in society.
In my photograph, I shot on a plain background so that the sole focus of the photograph would be on the character. There is a tape measure wrapped around the models neck which is also gagging her, and there are somewhat visible red marks where it has harmed her. She is also holding an apple with a bite taken out of it. The tape measure represents the insecurities about weight and body shape that girls may have about themselves as teen girls. The character is eating an apple but her insecurities about how she looks and her weight are forcing her not to eat it even though it is just a healthy apple.
An obstacle I encountered while shooting was that the tape measure was shorter than I thought. The tape measure did not have the prominent and bold effect that i had planned for in the photo. However the I am still happy with the way my photo came out and the message is shows and would not re shoot.
